Children’s University – Parents and children working together

Across November and December, I had the pleasure of working with the Children’s University. I had been invited to support Essex Children’s University with their University visits and taster sessions. These were weekend events for both parents and children, aimed at giving families a taste of University life and classes. I delivered our Power Hour workshop: ‘Goals and Aspirations’ as part of a carousel format. The students also got to take part in sessions on science, medicine and animal care. Working with families enables the children to discuss and question their aspirations with their parents in a secure and relaxed setting. This is a model that we have been championing for a while now with regard to parent evening workshops at schools. Parents find it extremely beneficial to attend with their child, hear the same message and learn the same techniques. In this way, parents feel more equipped to discuss revision with their child, knowing that they are ‘on the same page’.
