Some saying it’s the best talk they’ve ever had

We had James deliver the ‘goals and aspirations’ workshop today at Callywith College. It was pitched so perfectly it’s like he got into my brain or something. It was exactly what we were after. Today's theme at college was all about aiming high and believing in yourself and his talk fitted this perfectly. We’ve had a whole week of events and James was by far the best bit of the week. Staff and students have said it’s the best talk they’ve been to all year with some saying it’s the best talk they’ve ever had. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Danny is an asset to your organisation

The Exams made Easy sessions were fantastic and Danny is an asset to your organisation – it was refreshing to have someone delivering this type of workshop who was enthusiastic and motivating. All of our students came out of the session with confidence and motivation to apply the strategies instantly. We are hoping to book him up to work with some other year groups in the future.

Really engaged the students

The workshop was very well delivered by Sander and really engaged the students. The soft skills taught in the session were easily transferable to their current studies and all the students felt they could use these going forward. I felt Stepping Up was an excellent alternative to introducing students to different study skills.

Peer tutoring – challenging students to reflect on tutoring holistically

I thought Sander was great, very engaging and good at getting the students involved. I was particularly impressed by the peer tutoring session which challenged the students to reflect on tutoring holistically. Thinking about the multiple dimensions of being a peer tutor including body language, matching and tone, as well as the practical skills required. These psychosocial dimensions of being a peer tutor will also be useful outside of the boundaries of education.

The timing was excellent and the sessions had a clear narrative

I attended 3 of the sessions, including the Parents event in the evening. The response from the students was overwhelmingly positive. I was impressed by all aspects, especially the pace and the level of the sessions. The examination revision sessions was particularly well received as many of the students had just come out of their recent A level mocks and a little uncertain about how to progress with regards to the next stage and preparation for the actual exams. The sessions gave good and practical strategies, which the students can take on board and I have already seen some using these within their studies. The timing was excellent and the sessions had a clear narrative, which enabled students to take on new ideas and approaches. The short tasks were excellent as they enabled students to see that they worked and was within their capability.

Thank you MADE!

We had three trainers from MADE working with year 11, 12 and 13 over two days this week. It was the first or second day back for most students and a few were new to St Wilfrid’s sixth form. The sixth form students really seemed to enjoy the creativity tests and the games used to start off the session which woke them up and got them ready for some more serious work. The ‘Active Reading’ methods will be very useful for their upcoming revision and assignments; one of the teachers in Joe’s session commented ‘I wish I had been taught this in sixth form’. Both trainers were really enthusiastic and connected well with the students. A staff member who was observing James’s session commented on how well he engaged his audience and maintained their interest. On the second day the trainers Danny and James worked with year 11 students on ‘Goals and Aspirations’. I think this was a really good session to start students off at the beginning of their GCSE year as it really made them think about what they want to achieve and how they might do it in a realistic way. The students seemed to find the section about ‘visualisation’ really interesting. I was in Danny’s sessions most of the day and it was really good that he went round the groups and spoke to students individually about their own goals and interests. We hope to build on the work done in these sessions over the next academic year. Thank you MADE!
