Students were excited to find out that Rob was coming back

I was in the sessions yesterday and really enjoyed them too. Students were excited to find out that Rob was coming back to do another workshop with them as they loved the Aspirations workshop on Futures Friday. They said his personality is great and the sessions were informative and fun. From my point of view as a teacher, I realised that we don't always spend enough time explaining how to use the revision techniques and often make assumptions i.e that students know what to highlight when highlighting key points in texts. I also think that we as teachers need to spend more time explaining how/why these methods work so that students buy into them and are willing to give them a try. Rob reads the students really well, he praises students who need to engage in the session better and learns and uses their names really quickly. He uses humour and speaks to as many of the students as he can during the sessions. I think they all feel like they know him now. Some comments from my year 11 form: "I think the sessions were really helpful. I learned new techniques for revision that I haven't thought of before." "Rob's sessions were enjoyable and definitely not boring. He brought personality and humour to them." "He really interacted with the group instead of just talking"

The content of the workshop was excellent

Joe was excellent, really engaging and interactive and he worked well with all the students. The content of the workshop was excellent, it included really practical ways of revising and remembering information and key facts. A number of the students have said how useful they found the workshop and they feel it will really help with their revision.

The boys took a real shine to him

It was fabulous. Rob really engaged the boys from the outset not only with the materials that he used but also with his own energetic style and delivery (he reminded me of me, which is a compliment in itself). The fact that the class is made up of 26 boys, some of whom are the most challenging in the school, meant that the day could have been a real challenge for some teachers. However, Rob’s professionalism, energy, drive and motivation absolutely shone through. The boys took a real shine to him and have asked if they can work with him again-a sign that he made a real impression on them. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, Rob, and Lucy from Staffs Uni for giving us this opportunity to work with your company. Thanks again, Dave and the boys.

Joe’s delivery was excellent

It was an excellent day, the variety of different workshops on offer engaged all of our Year 11 pupils. Joe's delivery was excellent he made each of the different workshops, fun, engaging and informative ensuring all pupils interacted and came away from the sessions having learnt new skills. We would definitely look to have MADE training back in to deliver to our pupils in the future

I really can’t praise him highly enough.

The feedback was excellent from the students and especially the parents. James was an absolute star throughout the day, even dealing with the technical conundrum when the power went! I hope he got home OK!? The students today have been discussing it in PD and it has proved a valuable starting point in getting them thinking forward and to their exams and one we can keep referencing. I really can't praise him highly enough. I've copied an email form a parent below so you can get a sample of feedback but there was a lot of verbal praise too last night.

Rob was brilliant and the delivery was excellent

The girls have really enjoyed the sessions; Rob was brilliant and the delivery was excellent. The verbal feedback I have had from the pupils has been very positive and they now have a lot more ideas about revision techniques which may work for them; it will be interesting to see the impact report from yourselves. All in all, a very positive start to Year 11! Many thanks for all your help with setting this up!

He delivered the sessions in such a fun way

We were delighted to be able to run the 2 workshops to fairly small groups of our year 10 Next Steps targeted students today. The trainer, James Sherwood was lively, engaging and really approachable. He delivered the session in such a fun way; the students were focussed and I loved the way they all eventually went away with pens and highlighters to help motivate further study. The workshop media used and worksheet were good quality – I liked the layout of the sheet with the different tasks to complete. It was great to have a different person – not their usual teachers, to tell the students that they do need to study hard to achieve success and get them to think about how to make study more effective and use their time wisely – e.g. by prioritising tasks while still having a work flow to the day with breaks. As the audience were targeted students by Next Steps, many of whom qualify for the Pupil Premium due to deprivation, I thought the section exploring the potential barriers and distractions to their study present at home worked really well. As a Science teacher, I enjoyed the examples based on biology and chemistry and the session did keep their attention for the whole 2 hours. Many thanks to Next Steps South West for facilitating these sessions and to James for the excellent workshops. Thanks again – we would never have had funding available for this if it wasn’t for Next Steps!

If only you could reach every school in the land!

What was so inspiring about Sander's approach to learning, was that he was challenging the 'learned helplessness' so many students hold in this run up to exams. Especially, if they believe their efforts will have little effect on the level they find themselves at now - having come to the end of 11 years in education! However, Sander turned that all on its head today by completely changing this mindset! By simply assuring them that by the end of the session they WILL memorise a vast set of information in a short amount of time, he started to sew the first seeds of a new found confidence in their own ability. He backed that up with several memory strategies and POW! the entire room was alive throwing the information back at him. Varying the tone and sound of his delivery and more importantly nurturing that new found confidence with positivity, encouragement, value and fun, he had every student engaged. By the end of the session he had proved and had them believe, that if they can learn this new way to focus, not only these forthcoming exams but all future learning is now well within their reach! If only you could reach every school in the land! So impressed!

Strategies which will make their revision far more effective

I would like to just feedback on the revision session which happened yesterday with our year 11s. Firstly, the quality of the resources were excellent: engaging and purposeful. The idea of sending students away with their own pen and highlighter also worked well - they love having little gifts like this! The content of the session was pitched exactly right for our students, all of them walked out of the session with at least a couple more ideas and strategies to apply to their own independent learning, strategies which will make their revision far more effective. Lastly, and in my opinion most importantly, the trainer (Rob Snell) was fantastic. From start to finish he engaged all of the students through his delivery of the material and his passion for these revision strategies. It is always difficult at this time of year convincing class teachers to let year 11 miss some of their curriculum time, but I have feedback to all of them this morning how useful this was.

Peer tutoring – challenging students to reflect on tutoring holistically

I thought Sander was great, very engaging and good at getting the students involved. I was particularly impressed by the peer tutoring session which challenged the students to reflect on tutoring holistically. Thinking about the multiple dimensions of being a peer tutor including body language, matching and tone, as well as the practical skills required. These psychosocial dimensions of being a peer tutor will also be useful outside of the boundaries of education.
